Living with a neurological condition

While there is no cure for progressive neurological conditions, the symptoms can often be managed using a combination of medical and non-medical treatments. Due to the difference in how neurological conditions affect different people, there is no one standard treatment path.

Drugs can be prescribed by your neurologist or doctor to help manage symptoms and a range of other medical specialist may be involved in your treatment plan.

Multi-Disciplinary Teams involve a number of team members, these can include:

Physiotherapists

Physiotherapy can be beneficial in maintaining muscle strength and mobility, and so keeping you active as long as possible. Your neurologist will refer you to a physiotherapist as part of your care programme.

Neuro-psychologists

A neuropsychologist deal with the effects of neurological conditions on a person’s mood, behaviour or ability to think. You can ask your GP or neurologist to refer you to a neuropsychologist.

Occupational Therapists

An Occupational Therapist can advise on practical tips and aids for day-to-day living, including specialist equipment or alterations to your home. You can ask your GP or Public Health Nurse to refer you to an Occupational Therapist.

Mental Health Services

A mental health professional such as a counsellor, psychiatrist, psychologist or mental health nurse can help with difficulties relating to mood and emotional well-being. You can ask your GP for a referral.

Make sure you use a reputable therapist who is fully insured and is a member of a professional body – don’t be afraid to ask.

Check with your neurologist / doctor for any contraindications.

Complementary therapists

Many people with a neurological condition find complementary therapies useful. These can be beneficial in addition to conventional treatments. There is little research evaluating the effectiveness of complementary therapies for people with specific conditions, but there is no doubt that it can create an overall sense of wellbeing.

Reflexology and massage are the most common treatments favoured by people with MS and other neurological conditions, while acupuncture, aromatherapy, yoga, osteopathy and chiropractic are also options.

We have a team of professional, fully qualified holistic therapists offering a range of services including aromatherapy, reiki, massage, sacrocranial massage and more.

When you register with us we give you a voucher book entitling you to a set of half-price treatments. We hope to welcome you into the centre to enjoy one of these lovely, pampering treatments.

There’s always a cup of tea and a chat on offer too!
